What i wanted to do with this project was to further experiment with character animation, why? Well after doing the baseball exercise; which was completed using video reference. I realised that this was something i really enjoyed but need more practice in. Why i think its important to keep refining this skill is that if i can break down real life reference well, my animations will have an overall quality improvement and a more lifelike feel.
My goals for the end of this project is;
Better understanding of distinctive characterisation.
Correct placement on the timeline for keys and breakdowns.
Using more complicated rigs and discovering if 3d animation is truly something i want to focus in.
Make a less biased comparison between 2d and 3d animation.
First i researched different approaches to animating, and how it is not just technical skills that can affect an animators final result. It’s also understanding the character and their motivations.
Some of my main inspiration came from Glen Keane and Aaron Blaise. Both are incredible artists and animators but they mostly work in a 2d realm. so for the purposes of this project i spent a few days researching some other animators on different levels and in different fields.
The video to the right is an cleaned up example of a character exercises. i found another video of EmptyFeet's which interested me. but also had a closer tie to my own skills in drawing. examples of my own animations can be found here while my drawings can be found here.
Vivziepop is an independent animator that still uses a lot of traditional animation, the video above is what i would ideally like one of my projects to reflect. a confident display of my understanding of lip syncing and character movement and maintaining proportions.
What i need to be working on to achieve these goals;
- Timing and correctly displaying body mechanics.
- Showing weight without looking like a loony toons character
- Constant practice, its better to have more works of lower polish then a few pieces perfectly polished.
Movements i want to focus on would probably be
- a character standing up (wanting to try a skirt or dress over the top)
- a walk cycle
- arm movements, hugs, punches and waving.
Bibliography - still to be put into AP formatting.
